South West England
The South West combines the UK's strongest solar resource with a farming base built on dairy and livestock. That's different from the flat arable blocks that suit the largest ground-mount schemes elsewhere. As a result, solar here tends to mean shed and barn roofs first. Smaller, carefully sited ground-mount or grazed arrays come second.
Solar in the South West starts from a different base than the rest of England. This is dairy and livestock country, not the wide arable blocks of the east. It also has the best solar resource in the UK.
Parts of the Cornish coast, for example, see meaningfully higher annual irradiance than the England average. That combination makes the numbers for rooftop solar strong almost everywhere — on parlours, cubicle sheds and grain stores. Land-lease or ground-mount options only enter the conversation later.
Milk and beef together account for the great majority of the region's farm-gate output. Both come with heavy, steady electricity demand. Parlour vacuum pumps, milk cooling and refrigeration run daily, regardless of season.
In practice, that's exactly the load profile that makes self-consumed rooftop solar pay back fastest. For dairy units, that usually means sizing an array to the shed roof and the herd's daily electricity draw. It should not default to the largest system the roof could technically hold.
Sometimes land, not roofs, is the opportunity. Here, the region's smaller, undulating fields suit smaller or more carefully sited ground-mount arrays better than a single vast block. Increasingly, that means grazed 'agrivoltaic' schemes that keep sheep — or, on some sites, cattle — on the land. That way, the scheme keeps the land in production instead of taking it out of use entirely.
That said, the trade-off against a land-lease income is worth modelling properly, not just assuming it. Current UK solar land rents run broadly £1,000–£1,350 an acre a year for larger schemes, typically index-linked. But the right structure — self-supply, lease, or a grazed hybrid — depends on your own herd, tenancy and succession position.
Land & farm character
The region is predominantly dairy and beef or sheep livestock country. Fields tend to be smaller and irregularly shaped, set into rolling or hilly terrain. Somerset's dairying clusters mainly on the Levels. That geography favours large parlour, barn and cubicle-shed roofs for self-consumption. It also favours smaller, carefully screened ground-mount arrays rather than the vast flat blocks that suit East Anglian arable land.
Rural grid capacity
The region sits within National Grid Electricity Distribution's South West licence area. Per NGED's own network development reporting, this area already carries one of the highest concentrations of embedded renewable generation. That ranks among the highest of any English DSO area. It is the legacy of an earlier wave of wind and ground-mount solar connections in Cornwall and Devon. As a result, some substations, particularly in mid-Cornwall and the Penwith peninsula, have limited further export headroom. That's why checking NGED's published capacity data before committing to a scheme matters more here than in less-developed rural networks.

Is the South West's grid too constrained for a new solar connection?
Not universally — but capacity is tighter here than in most rural England because of an earlier wave of wind and solar connections, particularly around mid-Cornwall. We check NGED's published capacity data for the specific site early, rather than assuming headroom.
Can we keep the herd on land we put solar on?
Often, yes. Sheep grazing under and between panel rows is well established on UK sites, and on some schemes cattle grazing is viable too depending on fencing and panel height. We assess whether a grazed design suits your land and stock before ruling it out.
